Keynote 1: Development communication: Past, Present and Future

By presenting an overview of the current development and communication approaches within the communication discipline and different related (sub)disciplines, this keynote aims to better understand the current state-of-the-art of the devcom field and identify future imperatives, both in theory as well as in the reality of today’s world. It will assess the ‘sustainability’ potential of certain devcom approaches and argue that studying development communication in a Western academic context is now of the utmost importance.

Discussion Round/ Diskussionsrunde

Development Communication as a field of studies?

Researchers and practitioner discuss a collaboration

It has been a long standing demand that researchers (communication studies) and practitioners (media assistance) collaborate more and better. One of the expectations is that researchers will gain better access to the field of studies and practitioners will be able to improve their approaches with evidence-based results. Aim of this open forum is to identify and discuss gaps in knowledge and how a better collaboration between researchers and practitioners could be encouraged.

The following questions are central:

Where are interfaces between communication studies and media assistance (media development)? Which role do findings from communication studies play, if at all? Where could a transfer between communication studies and media assistance take place?
